There are two types of lighting available to a garden designer, natural light and artificial light. An experienced garden designer will use natural light to enhance the garden design by bringing in light and shade through clever planting and placement of garden structures and water. Artificial lighting has become a prominent resource to the garden designer. It enables gardens to undergo a nocturnal transformation allowing you to extend the use of your garden into the evenings.
Today there is an array of artificial light available to the garden designer. This provides the garden designer with exciting options with the practical issues of garden lighting and exciting opportunities to the designer to provide further interest with colour and shadows to imbue the space with qualities not available with natural light.
There are environmental implications to be considered when requesting outdoor lighting. In September the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) announced some major changes in energy saving lighting systems. These will take effect in 2011. Outside lighting now comes under the building control department within the Local Authority. Design Outside is aware of these and only too happy to advise you on your garden lighting requirements.
