Genres of Garden Styles

There are many garden genres and within each many styles.  Styles come and go often fuelled by the media, fashionistas and the annual national RHS garden show events.  A style can be a trend that has been adopted my many to become the ‘style of the moment’.  It can be through particular plants, a colour, the volume of planting used or not used or new materials, recently developed.  Some styles last longer than others and some prove more popular.  The important thing is that there is something for everyone.

The area of garden design is a challenging and exciting one especially given our fast systems of communication, travel and the pending environmental changes which are currently providing many opportunities and implications for today’s gardens.  Already in response to the changes in seasonal temperatures, planting trends have altered.  Plants that would not usually survive a winter in our grandparent’s time can now be utilised in many areas of the country.  This provides the designer with an opportunity to give gardens a strong identity which can help to create a warm relaxed ambience for the popular outside dining gardens, a developing style of garden.

There is also a serious side to the environmental changes which can be seen with the new legislation which is slowly creeping in.  A new garden style may emerge from the use of this legislation as designers have to become more creative with design and available materials.

Design Outside is not restricted to a particular garden genre or style, every garden is unique to its location.  Design Outside has provided a brief overview of some garden genres.
